Spanish police have discovered a sophisticated, multi-level underground tunnel equipped with a rail system used to transport hashish from Morocco into the Spanish enclave of Ceuta. The Civil Guard announced the find on March 31, 2026, following an operation that began in late 2025.
The tunnel, approximately 500 meters long and reaching depths of up to 20 meters, featured ventilation, electricity, and a complex support structure. It originated in a Moroccan hillside near the border and terminated inside a fortified house in Ceuta, allowing for the discreet loading and unloading of drug shipments.
Authorities described the construction as "unprecedented" in its complexity for drug trafficking in the area. The tunnel contained carts running on rails to move large quantities of hashish efficiently. No arrests were made during the discovery, as the tunnel appeared to have been recently abandoned.
The Civil Guard has taken control of the infrastructure on the Spanish side. The discovery highlights the ongoing challenges of policing the porous border between Morocco and Ceuta, a key entry point for cannabis resin from North Africa into Europe.
