Police in Whakatāne have arrested two men following the circulation of a disturbing video on social media. The footage allegedly shows the individuals throwing live puppies into the Whakatāne River.

Authorities were alerted to the incident by members of the public who saw the video online. Eastern Bay of Plenty Area Commander Inspector Phil Gillbanks confirmed the arrests, stating the men, aged 19 and 20, are facing serious animal cruelty charges.

The SPCA is assisting with the investigation. Inspector Gillbanks condemned the alleged acts, emphasizing that such behavior is abhorrent and taken extremely seriously by police. The investigation is ongoing to determine the full circumstances.
