Morocco's national railway operator, the Office National des Chemins de Fer (ONCF), has signed strategic agreements with South Korea's Korea Railroad Corporation (KORAIL) and Hyundai Rotem Co. to structure its future Réseau Express Régional (RER) network, according to a statement from the Moroccan Ministry of Transport and Logistics on June 18, 2026.
The agreements cover the acquisition of rolling stock, technical supervision, and maintenance services for the planned RER system, which aims to improve commuter rail services in major Moroccan cities. The deal was announced during a ceremony in Rabat attended by Moroccan and South Korean officials.
Hyundai Rotem will supply trains and provide technical support, while KORAIL will assist with operational planning and staff training. The financial terms of the agreements were not disclosed, but the project is part of Morocco's broader plan to expand its rail network ahead of the 2030 FIFA World Cup, which the country will co-host with Spain and Portugal.
The partnership marks a significant step in Morocco-South Korea relations, with Seoul positioning itself as a key partner in North African infrastructure development. The ONCF has not yet announced a timeline for the RER network's completion.
