Five years after its launch, Morocco's New Development Model (NMD) has yielded mixed results, according to economist Ali Ghanbouri. In an interview with Finances News Hebdo, Ghanbouri stated that the government prioritized crisis management over deep structural reform.
Ghanbouri noted that while some progress has been made in areas like social protection and infrastructure, the overall implementation has been uneven. He highlighted that the NMD's ambitious goals, including reducing social disparities and boosting economic competitiveness, remain partially unfulfilled.
The economist criticized the lack of a comprehensive reform agenda, arguing that the government's focus on short-term emergencies has hindered long-term transformation. He called for a renewed commitment to the NMD's original vision, emphasizing the need for better coordination and accountability.
As of June 2026, the NMD remains a central pillar of Morocco's development strategy, but experts like Ghanbouri suggest that without significant adjustments, its impact may fall short of expectations.
