DAR ES SALAAM: Calls are growing for Tanzanian higher education institutions to introduce specialized programs to produce aviation medicine professionals, aiming to address a critical shortage of such experts in the country.

The push for this specialized training was highlighted by the Aerospace Medical and Training Centre (AMTC). The center emphasizes the urgent need for locally trained specialists to support the nation's growing aviation sector and ensure the health and safety of flight crews and passengers.

Aviation medicine, a branch of occupational medicine, focuses on the physiological and psychological challenges of flight. Experts in this field are essential for pilot medical certifications, managing in-flight emergencies, and conducting aeromedical research.

Currently, Tanzania faces a significant gap in this niche medical field, relying on a limited number of professionals or sending candidates abroad for training. Establishing local programs is seen as a strategic move to build sustainable domestic expertise.
