The 29th Annual Research Workshop (ARW) opened today in Zanzibar, bringing together policymakers, researchers, development partners, and private sector stakeholders to deliberate on strategies for harnessing the blue economy as a driver of sustainable development.
According to the Zanzibar Planning Commission, the workshop focuses on marine and coastal resources, including fisheries, tourism, and maritime transport, to promote economic growth while ensuring environmental conservation. The event is part of ongoing efforts to implement the Zanzibar Blue Economy Policy, launched in 2020.
Key topics include sustainable fishing practices, marine biodiversity protection, and investment in ocean-based industries. The workshop aims to produce actionable recommendations for the Zanzibar government and its partners.
