The encounter, taking place amid broader diplomatic efforts over Iran's nuclear program, represents a significant, if cautious, step in relations between two countries that have had no formal diplomatic ties since 1980.
The meeting comes as the United States and Iran have been engaged in indirect nuclear negotiations, with both sides expressing a desire to reach a new agreement to replace the 2015 Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), which the US withdrew from in 2018 under President Donald Trump. Iran has continued to advance its uranium enrichment program in the years since, raising international concern about its nuclear capabilities.
Despite the historic nature of the encounter, deep mistrust remains a central obstacle.
