Authorities in Valence, in the DrΓ΄me department of southeastern France, dismantled an illegal textile workshop that had been employing 24 undocumented workers, including a number of Moroccan nationals. The operation was uncovered following an investigation by labor inspectors and police services.
The clandestine workshop is alleged to have operated outside French labor law, with workers reportedly subjected to exploitative conditions. Undocumented workers in such settings are frequently vulnerable to abuse, including below-minimum wages, excessive working hours, and unsafe working environments.
French authorities have been intensifying efforts to crack down on illegal labor networks, particularly in the textile and garment sectors, where clandestine workshops have historically been a persistent issue. Employers found guilty of knowingly hiring undocumented workers face significant fines and potential imprisonment under French law.
The case highlights broader concerns about labor exploitation and irregular migration in France. Advocacy groups have called for stronger protections for undocumented workers who come forward as witnesses or victims in such investigations, noting that fear of deportation often prevents workers from reporting abuse.
