New York (United Nations), June 17, 2026 (SPS) – Algeria's Permanent Representative to the UN, Ambassador Amar Bendjama, stated that Algeria remains firmly committed to supporting all sincere efforts aimed at reaching a settlement to the decolonization of Western Sahara, according to a statement from the Sahrawi Press Service (SPS).
Speaking at a UN session, Bendjama emphasized Algeria's principled position in favor of the right to self-determination for the Sahrawi people, in line with UN resolutions. He called for renewed international engagement to break the deadlock in the peace process, which has been stalled for decades.
The statement did not specify new initiatives or concrete proposals. The Western Sahara conflict, a dispute between Morocco and the Polisario Front, remains unresolved since the 1991 ceasefire. Algeria hosts Sahrawi refugees and supports the Polisario Front diplomatically.
