The U.S. Army announced on Sunday, May 10, 2026, that the body of 1st Lt. Lamont Key Jr., one of two soldiers missing during a training exercise in Morocco, has been recovered. The soldiers were reported missing on May 8 after failing to return from a hike near the training site.
According to U.S. Africa Command, the two soldiers were participating in a routine annual training exercise when they went missing. Search efforts involved Moroccan and U.S. military personnel. The cause of death is under investigation, and the search for the second soldier continues.
1st Lt. Key was assigned to the 2nd Battalion, 1st Infantry Regiment, based in Fort Wainwright, Alaska. The Army has not released further details pending notification of next of kin.
