Yusuf Tuggar, Nigeria's former minister of foreign affairs, lost the All Progressives Congress (APC) governorship primary for Bauchi State on Saturday, May 23, 2026. The primary, held ahead of the 2027 general elections, was won by Mohammed Abubakar, a former governor of the state.
According to results announced by the primary election committee, Abubakar secured 1,234 votes, defeating Tuggar who received 567 votes. Two other aspirants trailed with fewer votes. The election was conducted at the APC state secretariat in Bauchi under the supervision of officials from the party's national headquarters.
Abubakar, who served as Bauchi governor from 2015 to 2023, is now the APC flagbearer for the 2027 governorship election. Tuggar, who served as foreign minister under President Bola Tinubu, congratulated Abubakar and urged party unity ahead of the general election.
The primary was largely peaceful, with delegates from all 20 local government areas of the state participating. APC national leadership has commended the exercise as free and fair.
