Starbucks Korea workers have formed the first labor union at a domestic coffee franchise, joining the Korean Chemical, Textile & Food Workers' Union. The union was established on July 18, 2026, according to reports from Yonhap News Agency.
The move comes amid ongoing labor disputes in South Korea's service industry, where workers have sought better wages and working conditions. Starbucks Korea, a joint venture between Starbucks and South Korean retail giant E-Mart, operates over 1,800 stores nationwide.
The union's formation marks a significant step for labor rights in the coffee franchise sector, which has historically been non-unionized. The Korean Chemical, Textile & Food Workers' Union confirmed the development, stating that the union aims to address issues such as wage disparities and irregular work schedules.
