Peru's President Dina Boluarte reaffirmed her country's support for Morocco's territorial integrity and sovereignty over the Western Sahara region during a meeting with Moroccan officials on July 14, 2026, in Lima. The statement aligns with Peru's consistent position on the issue since 2023.
According to a joint communiqué issued after the talks, Boluarte emphasized Peru's backing for the autonomy plan proposed by Morocco as a credible and serious solution to the Western Sahara dispute. The plan, presented to the United Nations in 2007, envisions broad autonomy for the region under Moroccan sovereignty.
The meeting comes amid ongoing diplomatic efforts by Morocco to garner international support for its position. Peru had previously suspended diplomatic relations with the self-proclaimed Sahrawi Arab Democratic Republic (SADR) in 2023, aligning with a growing number of Latin American countries that have shifted their stance on the issue.
Morocco's Foreign Minister Nasser Bourita, who led the Moroccan delegation, thanked Peru for its consistent support and highlighted the strong bilateral relations between the two countries. The two sides also discussed ways to enhance economic cooperation and trade.
The Western Sahara conflict remains a key issue in North African geopolitics, with the United Nations continuing to mediate between Morocco and the Polisario Front, which seeks independence for the territory.
