Director Jon Turteltaub has confirmed that a third installment of the National Treasure franchise is in the works. Speaking at a live taping of the National Treasure Hunt podcast, Turteltaub said, "I have not said anything before this, but you deserve to have the scoop," according to The Philadelphia Inquirer.
The announcement comes after years of speculation and development hurdles. In 2022, a Disney+ series titled National Treasure: Edge of History was released, but it did not feature Nicolas Cage as Benjamin Franklin Gates. The series was canceled after one season, but a film sequel has been in development since 2020, with Jerry Bruckheimer producing.
As of August 2026, no release date or casting details have been officially announced. Turteltaub's comments suggest the project is moving forward, but fans may need to wait for further updates from Disney.
The original National Treasure (2004) and its sequel Book of Secrets (2007) were box office successes, grossing over $347 million and $457 million worldwide, respectively. The franchise is known for its blend of historical puzzles and action-adventure.
