Morocco is investing heavily in its port infrastructure to strengthen its position as a regional logistics hub. Key projects include the expansion of Tanger Med, the construction of Nador West Med, and the development of Dakhla Atlantique. These initiatives aim to increase cargo capacity and support economic growth.
Tanger Med, already one of Africa's busiest ports, is undergoing expansion to handle more containers and vehicles. The port handled over 8 million TEUs in 2025, according to official figures. The new Nador West Med port, located on the Mediterranean coast, is designed to handle bulk cargo and hydrocarbons, with a capacity of 3 million TEUs initially.
The Dakhla Atlantique port project, in the disputed Western Sahara region, is part of Morocco's strategy to develop the southern provinces. It will focus on fishing, trade, and energy exports. The project is expected to cost around $1.2 billion and create thousands of jobs.
These port developments are part of Morocco's National Port Strategy 2030, which aims to modernize infrastructure and attract foreign investment. The country is also leveraging its geographic position near Europe and Africa to become a transshipment hub.
