Morocco is bracing for an early and exceptional heatwave this week, with temperatures expected to soar between 35 and 40°C from Tuesday to Thursday, according to the Moroccan Directorate General of Meteorology (DGM). Localized peaks could approach 42°C in some regions.
The heatwave, which began on May 19, 2026, is attributed to a mass of hot air from the Sahara, affecting several provinces including Casablanca, Rabat, Marrakech, and Fes. The DGM has issued an orange alert for these areas, warning of health risks for vulnerable populations.
Authorities recommend staying hydrated, avoiding outdoor activities during peak hours (11 a.m. to 4 p.m.), and checking on elderly or isolated individuals. This early heatwave is part of a broader trend of extreme weather events in North Africa, linked to climate change.
