Morocco's Head of Government, Aziz Akhannouch, has scheduled a meeting of the Government Council for Thursday, June 25, 2026, to review a draft law amending and supplementing Law 08-12 on the Order of Physicians. The reform aims to resolve a prolonged crisis that has prevented the election of the Order's governing bodies.
According to a statement from the Head of Government's department, the draft law, prepared by the Ministry of Health and Social Protection, seeks to amend provisions related to the composition and functioning of the Order's councils. The reform is expected to pave the way for long-delayed elections within the medical profession.
The Order of Physicians has been without elected leadership since 2019, when the mandate of its previous council expired. Disputes over the interpretation of Law 08-12, particularly regarding voting procedures and eligibility criteria, have blocked successive attempts to organize elections.
Health professionals and unions have repeatedly called for a legislative solution to end the impasse. The reform is seen as a critical step to restore normal governance within the Order and address broader concerns about the regulation of medical practice in Morocco.
The Government Council will also examine other draft laws and decrees during its session. The outcome of the discussion on the medical reform is awaited with interest by the healthcare community.
