Morocco's Central Bureau of Judicial Investigations (BCIJ), the kingdom's primary counter-terrorism agency, announced the dismantling of a dangerous extremist cell operating across several localities in central Morocco. The operation began on April 5, 2026, and targeted a group of six individuals suspected of holding and acting upon a takfirist ideology — a radical Islamist doctrine that declares other Muslims as apostates and justifies violence against them.
The six suspects are accused of committing criminal acts motivated by their extremist beliefs. According to Moroccan security authorities, the cell had been under surveillance before the coordinated arrests were carried out across multiple locations in the central region of the country. The BCIJ, which operates under the supervision of the General Directorate of National Security (DGSN), has been at the forefront of Morocco's counter-terrorism efforts for over a decade.
Moroccan authorities indicated that the suspects will be placed in custody and referred to the competent judicial authorities for further investigation. The dismantling of this cell is part of Morocco's broader and ongoing strategy to neutralize extremist networks before they can carry out attacks on national soil or abroad. Takfirist ideology has been identified by Moroccan security services as one of the primary drivers of radicalization among individuals recruited by groups such as ISIS and Al-Qaeda-affiliated networks.
