Starting in summer 2026, Moroccans living abroad (MRE) arriving at airports like Mohammed V in Casablanca or Marrakech Menara may face new rules for purchasing local SIM cards. According to reports from Moroccan media and telecom sources, the National Telecommunications Regulatory Agency (ANRT) is implementing a measure requiring travelers to present a valid passport or national ID before buying a prepaid SIM card at airport kiosks.
This change aims to enhance security and combat fraud linked to unregistered SIM cards. Previously, travelers could buy SIMs with minimal identification, a practice that facilitated scams and illegal activities. The new rule will apply to all airport SIM vendors, including those operated by Maroc Telecom, Orange Maroc, and Inwi.
For the estimated 5 million Moroccans in France and millions more across Europe, this could mean longer wait times at airport kiosks. However, officials say the process will be streamlined to avoid major delays. Travelers are advised to carry their passport or residence permit when arriving.
The measure is part of a broader digital security push in Morocco, which has seen a rise in mobile money fraud. Similar ID requirements already exist in other countries, including France and Spain, for SIM card purchases.
