Morocco is intensifying efforts to protect its water resources through accelerated watershed management, according to recent announcements by government officials. The initiative, led by the Ministry of Equipment and Water and the Ministry of Agriculture, Maritime Fisheries, Rural Development, and Water and Forests, aims to combat the country's ongoing drought crisis.
Minister of Equipment and Water Nizar Baraka emphasized the importance of integrated water resource management, including the construction of dams and the rehabilitation of water basins. The strategy aligns with Morocco's National Water Plan 2020-2050, which seeks to address water scarcity exacerbated by climate change.
Minister of Agriculture, Maritime Fisheries, Rural Development, and Water and Forests Mohammed Sadiki highlighted the role of watershed management in supporting agricultural resilience. The plan includes reforestation, soil conservation, and the use of modern irrigation techniques to reduce water waste.
Morocco has faced severe drought conditions in recent years, with rainfall deficits impacting both urban water supply and agricultural production. The government has allocated significant funding for water infrastructure projects, including desalination plants and water transfer systems, as part of a broader strategy to ensure water security.
