Moroccan and French breeders of Montbéliarde cattle have strengthened their partnership, focusing on genetic improvement and sustainable farming practices. The collaboration, highlighted at a recent symposium in Casablanca, aims to boost milk production and herd resilience in North Africa.
Montbéliarde cattle, known for their high milk yield and adaptability, have been imported to Morocco since the 1980s. Today, over 15,000 head are raised in the country, contributing significantly to local dairy industries.
French breeders from the Franche-Comté region, the breed's birthplace, provide technical training and genetic material. In return, Moroccan farmers share insights on managing herds in arid climates, fostering a two-way exchange of knowledge.
The initiative has led to a 12% increase in average milk production per cow in participating Moroccan farms over the past three years, according to the Moroccan Association of Montbéliarde Breeders.
