According to a report by Le Matin, the Moroccan government plans to supply Marrakech with desalinated seawater from the Safi desalination plant by the end of July 2026. This initiative aims to alleviate the severe water shortages affecting the region due to prolonged drought.
The Safi desalination plant, currently under construction, is expected to produce 200,000 cubic meters of water per day, with a portion allocated to Marrakech via a pipeline. The project is part of Morocco's national water strategy to secure drinking water for urban areas.
Local authorities have confirmed that the infrastructure for water transfer is being expedited to meet the July deadline. The desalinated water will primarily be used for domestic consumption, helping to reduce pressure on overexploited groundwater sources.
