Maritime logistics expert Najib Cherfaoui states there is currently no fundamental justification for a sustained increase in global sea freight prices. He made these remarks in an interview, analyzing market conditions in the wake of geopolitical tensions.

Cherfaoui acknowledges that the outbreak of conflict in the Middle East a month prior caused initial volatility in oil markets. However, he explains that this spike has not translated into a lasting shock for maritime shipping costs. The expert attributes this to a complex interplay of global supply and demand factors buffering the sector.

The analyst points to an oversupply of container shipping capacity worldwide as a key dampening factor on prices. He contrasts the current situation with the extreme disruptions seen during the COVID-19 pandemic, noting that present port operations and global logistics chains are functioning with relative normality despite regional tensions.

While warning that prolonged conflict could alter the outlook, Cherfaoui concludes that for now, the underlying economic indicators do not support a scenario of sharply rising freight rates. His analysis suggests the market has absorbed the initial geopolitical risk without a major structural impact on shipping costs.
