MALE, Maldives (AP) β A high-risk operation to recover the bodies of four Italian divers from deep inside an underwater cave in the Maldives was suspended on Friday after rough seas repeatedly hampered efforts.
Speaking a day after the body of a fifth diver was recovered, Maldives police said the operation to retrieve the remaining four bodies was too dangerous to continue in the current conditions. The divers, all Italian nationals, died on May 8 while exploring the cave system near the island of Guraidhoo.
The Maldives police and the Italian embassy have been coordinating the recovery effort, which involves specialized deep-sea divers. No timeline has been given for when the operation might resume.
