Kenya's Cabinet Secretary for Foreign and Diaspora Affairs, Musalia Mudavadi, has reiterated his country's support for Morocco's autonomy plan for the Western Sahara region. The statement was made during an official visit to Rabat on April 9, 2026, where Mudavadi met with Moroccan Foreign Minister Nasser Bourita.
The Kenyan official described Morocco's autonomy initiative as "serious and credible" and the "only solution" to the long-standing regional dispute. This position aligns Kenya with a growing number of African and international states that have expressed support for the plan, which Morocco proposes as a compromise under its sovereignty.
The Western Sahara is a disputed territory claimed by Morocco and the Polisario Front, which seeks independence. The United Nations has led mediation efforts for decades, with the autonomy plan being one proposed political solution. Morocco has controlled most of the territory since 1975.
Mudavadi's visit also focused on strengthening bilateral cooperation, with the two nations signing agreements on agriculture and water management. The diplomatic support from Nairobi marks a continued shift in African alliances regarding the Sahara issue.
