Morocco is experiencing a severe heatwave from Saturday, May 23, to Tuesday, May 26, 2026, with temperatures forecast to reach up to 44°C in several regions, according to the General Directorate of Meteorology (DGM). The DGM issued an orange alert for provinces including Casablanca, Marrakech, and Fès, warning of extreme heat.
The heatwave is attributed to a hot air mass from the Sahara, pushing temperatures 10-15°C above seasonal norms. The DGM advises residents to stay hydrated, avoid direct sun exposure during peak hours (11 a.m. to 4 p.m.), and check on vulnerable individuals such as the elderly and children.
Local authorities have set up cooling centers in public buildings and extended pool hours in some cities. The Ministry of Health has activated emergency protocols to handle heat-related illnesses. No fatalities have been reported as of May 24, 2026.
