Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh, the 2024 vice-presidential candidate for Ghana's ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP), has initiated a defamation lawsuit against Sheikh Mohammed Kamil Samudeen, the deputy Imam of Ahlussuna Wal Jamaa-Ghana. The suit, filed at the Accra High Court, seeks damages for alleged defamatory statements.

According to verified court documents, the case (Suit No. GJ/0074/2025) was filed on March 26, 2025. The plaintiff, Dr. Prempeh, who is also the Minister of Energy, alleges that the cleric made false and damaging statements about him, which were widely published. The writ specifically cites claims that the defendant accused the minister of engaging in and promoting homosexuality, allegations Dr. Prempeh denies as entirely false.

The defendant, Sheikh Mohammed Kamil Samudeen, is required by the court to enter an appearance within eight days of being served. Dr. Prempeh's legal action underscores the ongoing tensions in Ghana regarding public discourse and legal accountability for statements made by religious and public figures.
