Petrol prices have dropped across Australia after the federal government's temporary cut to the fuel excise took effect. The measure, announced as part of the 2026-27 federal budget, reduced the excise by 10 cents per litre for a period of six months, aiming to provide cost-of-living relief to households.

According to data from the Australian Institute of Petroleum, the national average price for unleaded petrol fell significantly in the days following the cut's implementation. Motorists in major capital cities reported immediate reductions at the pump, with some retailers passing on the saving ahead of the official start date.

Treasurer Jim Chalmers stated the cut was a targeted response to global oil price volatility. "This is about providing a bit of help where we can, when people are filling up their car," he said. The policy is estimated to cost the budget several billion dollars in foregone revenue.

Economists note that while the cut provides temporary relief, its long-term impact on inflation is limited, and prices remain subject to international crude oil markets and currency exchange rates. The excise is scheduled to return to its full rate in late 2026.
