According to the United Nations World Tourism Organization (UNWTO), Côte d'Ivoire recorded over 2 million international tourist arrivals in 2025, a 15% increase from 2024. However, the ranking prioritized factors such as visa accessibility and safety, where Côte d'Ivoire scored lower.
Tourism officials in Abidjan expressed disappointment, noting that the country has invested heavily in new hotels and attractions, including the recently renovated Grand-Bassam historic district. They argue that the ranking does not reflect recent improvements.
Travel experts suggest that Côte d'Ivoire's omission may be due to outdated perceptions of political instability, despite the country's peaceful elections in 2025. The ranking's methodology remains undisclosed, raising questions about its objectivity.
