The European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) has supported a major modernization of the Port of Casablanca, Morocco's largest port, enabling it to accommodate Panamax-class vessels. The project, completed in 2025, involved a €90 million ($100 million) investment to deepen the port's main channel and expand container terminal capacity.
According to the EBRD, the upgrades allow the port to handle ships with a capacity of up to 5,000 TEUs (twenty-foot equivalent units), up from the previous limit of 3,500 TEUs. This is expected to reduce shipping costs and transit times for Moroccan exports, including phosphates, automotive parts, and agricultural products.
The modernization included dredging the access channel to a depth of 14 meters and installing new quay cranes. The project was co-financed by the EBRD and the Moroccan government, with technical assistance from the European Union.
Port officials stated that the upgrade will increase annual container throughput capacity from 1.5 million to 2 million TEUs, strengthening Casablanca's position as a key logistics hub in North Africa. The port handles approximately 60% of Morocco's maritime trade.
