Moroccan authorities have discovered the body of one of two U.S. soldiers who went missing during a military training exercise in southern Morocco, according to U.S. Africa Command (AFRICOM). The search continues for the second soldier.
The soldiers, assigned to the U.S. Army's 1st Security Force Assistance Brigade, were reported missing on May 8, 2026, after failing to return from a routine training mission near the coastal town of Tan-Tan. The cause of their disappearance is under investigation.
AFRICOM confirmed the recovery of remains on May 11, 2026, and expressed condolences to the soldier's family. The identity of the deceased is being withheld pending notification of next of kin. Moroccan military and U.S. personnel are cooperating in the ongoing search operation.
