KOLKATA: The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is set to form its first cabinet in West Bengal, with Suvendu Adhikari emerging as a leading candidate for the chief minister's post, according to party sources. The cabinet is expected to include a mix of veteran leaders and political newcomers.
Union Home Minister Amit Shah and Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Majhi will chair the BJP legislative party meeting to finalize the cabinet lineup. The meeting is scheduled to take place in Kolkata, though the exact date has not been confirmed as of May 8, 2026.
Adhikari, a former Trinamool Congress leader who joined the BJP in 2020, has been a prominent figure in Bengal politics. He currently serves as the Leader of Opposition in the West Bengal Legislative Assembly. Other names being discussed for ministerial positions include party veterans and first-time MLAs, reflecting the BJP's strategy to balance experience with fresh faces.
The development comes after the BJP's strong performance in the 2026 West Bengal assembly elections, where it secured a majority. The new cabinet is expected to be sworn in later this month, pending approval from the state governor.
