Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko has stated that Belarus and Algeria are working to increase their bilateral trade turnover to $500 million by the end of 2027. The announcement was made during Lukashenko's meeting with Algerian Ambassador to Belarus Salah Lebdioui in Minsk on April 9, 2026.
According to the Belarusian state news agency BelTA, Lukashenko emphasized the strong political relations between the two countries and expressed a desire to translate this into deeper economic cooperation. The president noted that current trade levels are below potential and called for enhanced collaboration in industry, agriculture, and science.
The $500 million target represents a significant increase from current figures. While specific recent trade statistics were not detailed in the official report, both nations have historically engaged in trade involving Belarusian machinery, agricultural products, and potash fertilizers.
This economic push occurs as Belarus seeks to diversify its trade partnerships amid ongoing international sanctions. Algeria, a major energy exporter in North Africa, represents a key strategic partner for Minsk in the region.
