At the 2026 FICAM (Festival International du Cinéma d'Animation de Meknès), held from May 18-23, Arab animation professionals gathered to discuss the persistent challenges in building a regional ecosystem. Despite growing interest and talent, the sector lacks structured funding, specialized training programs, and robust distribution channels, according to panelists.
Speakers noted that while individual studios in countries like Morocco, Tunisia, and Egypt produce award-winning shorts, the absence of a cohesive industry framework limits feature-length production and international co-productions. The festival's professional platform, FICAM Pro, hosted workshops on pitching and financing, but participants stressed the need for government-backed incentives.
Data from the Arab Animation Forum, cited during the event, indicates that less than 5% of animated content on Arab streaming platforms is locally produced. This gap underscores the reliance on imported series and films, which hampers the development of local intellectual property.
Despite these hurdles, optimism remains. The success of the Moroccan short film "The Last of the Berbers" at FICAM 2026, which won the jury prize, demonstrates the creative potential. However, without a sustainable ecosystem, such achievements remain isolated.
