Amnesty International has warned that the world is at a perilous juncture, with powerful states and their leaders systematically dismantling the foundations of international law. In its annual report for 2024/25, published on April 16, 2025, the human rights organization states that this has created a world of "growing inequality, injustice and insecurity."
The report specifically criticizes the actions of leaders including Russia's Vladimir Putin, Israel's Benjamin Netanyahu, and former US President Donald Trump, among others. It accuses them of using "predatory" tactics, undermining multilateral institutions, and violating international humanitarian law, which has exacerbated conflicts and human suffering in places like Gaza, Ukraine, and Sudan.
Amnesty's Secretary General, Agnès Callamard, stated that these leaders are "shredding the very fabric of international law, feeding cycles of violence, and obliterating any chance for peace and the realization of human rights." The report highlights a global trend where diplomacy is being replaced by force and where powerful nations block accountability at the UN Security Council.
The organization calls for a renewed global commitment to human rights and international law, urging people worldwide to resist these trends and hold their leaders accountable. It emphasizes that the rules-based order is being intentionally weakened, leading to catastrophic consequences for civilians in conflict zones.
