BULAWAYO – The Zimbabwean government has exempted students specializing in minority indigenous languages from the mathematics prerequisite for enrolment into secondary teacher training, according to a report by NewsDay Live on August 12, 2026. The move aims to boost the teaching of endangered languages.
The decision, announced by the Ministry of Primary and Secondary Education, applies to teacher trainees who will teach minority languages such as Tonga, Venda, and Kalanga. Previously, a pass in mathematics at O-level was required for all teacher training applicants.
Officials said the exemption is intended to increase the number of teachers for these languages, which are at risk of disappearing. The ministry hopes that by removing the maths barrier, more students will pursue careers in teaching these languages.
Education experts have welcomed the policy, noting that it addresses a critical shortage of teachers for minority languages. However, some have raised concerns about maintaining academic standards, while others argue that the move is necessary to preserve cultural heritage.
