The Writers Guild of America (WGA) and the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers (AMPTP) have reached a tentative agreement on a new three-year film and television contract. The deal was announced late on April 5, 2026, following several weeks of negotiations.
The agreement, which covers approximately 11,500 writers, must still be ratified by the full WGA membership. The union's negotiating committee unanimously recommended the deal to its members. Key issues in the talks included compensation for streaming content, artificial intelligence protections, and minimum staffing levels for television writers' rooms.
The previous contract was set to expire on May 1, 2026. This new tentative agreement, if ratified, would avert a potential industry-wide strike. The AMPTP, which represents major studios like Disney, Netflix, and Warner Bros., stated the deal recognizes the contributions of writers to the industry's success.
