Wicklow County Council has reported a surge in waste and litter complaints, exceeding 1,500 in the past year. In response, the council has intensified enforcement measures, including higher fines and the use of CCTV cameras to catch illegal dumpers.
According to official council records, the number of complaints has risen significantly compared to previous years. The council has deployed mobile CCTV units in known litter blackspots and increased the fixed penalty notice for littering from €150 to €500.
Local officials have emphasized that the crackdown aims to deter illegal dumping and protect the county's natural environment. The council also encourages residents to report incidents through its online portal.
Environmental groups have welcomed the stricter measures but stress the need for more public awareness campaigns and recycling facilities to address the root causes of littering.
