As temperatures soared above 35°C in much of France during the third week of June 2026, consumers turned to watermelon as a refreshing alternative to water. According to data from Interfel, the French interprofessional association for fresh fruits and vegetables, watermelon sales jumped 30% compared to the same period last year.
"Rather than water, I prefer a nice cold slice of watermelon," said Marie Dupont, a shopper in Paris. "It's hydrating and tastes great." The trend is supported by nutritionists who note that watermelon is 92% water, making it an excellent source of hydration during hot weather.
Supermarkets across the country reported increased demand, with some stores doubling their orders to meet customer needs. The heatwave, which began on June 15, is expected to continue through the end of the month, according to Météo-France.
