Intense exercise can sometimes push the body too far, leading to a serious condition called rhabdomyolysis. This occurs when overworked muscle fibres break down and release toxic proteins into the bloodstream. One of the hallmark signs is dark, tea-coloured urine after a hard session, which is not normal post-workout soreness.
Other warning signs include severe muscle pain that worsens instead of improving, noticeable swelling, and weakness that makes it difficult to move the affected muscles. If you experience these symptoms after a workout, especially if you are new to intense exercise or have been training in hot conditions, seek medical attention immediately. Early treatment with fluids can prevent kidney damage.
While rhabdomyolysis is rare, cases have been reported after extreme workouts, particularly in individuals who are dehydrated or take certain medications. Staying hydrated, warming up properly, and gradually increasing workout intensity can reduce the risk. Always listen to your body and avoid pushing through sharp or unusual pain.
