Residents and business owners in Wairoa are busy cleaning up and counting the cost of yet another flood following last week's devastating deluge. At least 14 properties in the town have been yellow-stickered after the river burst its banks late on Thursday, July 9, 2026, according to local authorities.
The floodwaters receded over the weekend, leaving a thick layer of silt and debris across affected areas. Civil Defence officials said the yellow stickers indicate that the properties are unsafe to enter without professional assessment, but no injuries have been reported.
Wairoa Mayor Craig Little told Radio New Zealand that the community is resilient but exhausted from repeated flooding events. βWeβve had three significant floods in the past 18 months, and itβs taking a toll on peopleβs mental health and finances,β he said.
Emergency services are providing sandbags and pumps to help with cleanup, and the government has activated a $200,000 relief fund for affected households and businesses. The New Zealand Red Cross is also on the ground offering support.
Meteorologists warn that more rain is forecast for the region later this week, raising concerns about further flooding. The Wairoa District Council is urging residents to stay vigilant and prepare for possible evacuations.
