The City of Benton Harbor, Michigan, has voted to transition its public Dial-A-Ride paratransit service to a contract with Via Transportation. The change is scheduled to take effect on April 1, 2026.
The Benton Harbor City Commission approved the three-year contract with Via during a meeting in late February 2026. The decision aims to modernize the on-demand ride service for seniors and residents with disabilities, potentially improving efficiency and rider experience through Via's software platform.
Via, known for its partnership with public transit agencies, will manage the booking, routing, and dispatch of vehicles. Current Dial-A-Ride drivers are expected to be offered employment with the new service provider to ensure continuity.
The transition follows a pilot program and is intended to maintain affordable fares while expanding service reliability. City officials have stated that the core service area and eligibility requirements for riders will remain unchanged under the new management.
