India's Minister for Electronics and Information Technology, Ashwini Vaishnaw, has warned the country's emerging semiconductor industry to brace for cyberattacks and operational disruptions. The caution comes as India accelerates efforts to build a domestic chip manufacturing ecosystem under the India Semiconductor Mission.
Vaishnaw emphasized that cybersecurity must be a core component of semiconductor infrastructure, given the strategic importance of chips to national security and economic resilience. He urged industry stakeholders to adopt robust security frameworks and remain vigilant against evolving threats.
India has been actively courting global semiconductor firms to set up fabrication plants and assembly units. The government has approved multiple projects, including a major fab in Gujarat and an OSAT facility in Assam, as part of its push to reduce reliance on imports.
The minister's warning highlights the growing recognition that semiconductor supply chains are vulnerable to cyber incidents, which could disrupt production and compromise sensitive data. As India scales up its chip ambitions, securing the digital and physical infrastructure will be critical to sustaining growth and attracting investment.
