Samsung has rolled out fingerprint authentication for Unified Payments Interface (UPI) transactions within its Samsung Wallet app in India. The feature allows users to authorize UPI payments using their registered fingerprint instead of entering a UPI PIN, streamlining the checkout process on compatible Galaxy devices.
The update is part of Samsung's ongoing efforts to enhance digital payment security and convenience in one of its largest markets. UPI, developed by the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI), is the country's most widely used real-time payment system, processing billions of transactions monthly.
To use the feature, users must have a fingerprint registered on their device and linked to Samsung Wallet. The biometric authentication is designed to meet NPCI's security standards for UPI transactions, ensuring that payments remain secure while reducing friction for everyday purchases.
Samsung Wallet already supports UPI payments through partnerships with various banks and payment providers. The addition of fingerprint authentication aligns with a broader industry trend toward biometric verification for financial transactions, as seen with other payment apps in India.
Users can enable the feature by updating the Samsung Wallet app to the latest version and ensuring their fingerprint is set up in the device settings. Samsung has not announced a specific rollout timeline, but the feature is expected to be available gradually across eligible devices.
