At least 100 people were killed after strong winds, heavy rain, hailstorms and lightning battered several districts of Uttar Pradesh, uprooting trees and electric poles and damaging houses, according to the Relief Commissioner's office. The highest number of deaths were reported from Agra, Firozabad, and Etawah districts, with lightning strikes being a major cause.
Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath expressed condolences and announced an ex-gratia payment of Rs 4 lakh each to the families of the deceased. He also ordered a damage survey and directed officials to ensure timely compensation for property loss and injuries.
The India Meteorological Department had issued warnings for thunderstorms and lightning in several parts of the state. The storms, which occurred on May 13, 2026, also disrupted power supply and traffic in affected areas.
