The strategy, released on May 13, 2026, highlights the ongoing activities of Boko Haram and the Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) in the region.
According to the document, these groups have exploited local grievances and weak governance to expand their influence, conducting attacks that have resulted in thousands of civilian casualties and displaced millions. The Lake Chad Basin, which includes parts of Nigeria, Niger, Chad, and Cameroon, remains a critical area of concern due to its porous borders and the presence of multiple armed factions.
The US strategy emphasizes a whole-of-government approach, combining military support with diplomatic and development efforts to address root causes of extremism. It also calls for enhanced cooperation with regional partners, including the Multinational Joint Task Force (MNJTF), which has been combating insurgents in the area since 2015.
Experts note that while the US has reduced its direct military footprint in Africa, it continues to provide intelligence, training, and logistical support to local forces. The new strategy reflects a shift toward more sustainable, locally-led security solutions.
