A recent survey by the Kozhikode Municipal Corporation has revealed that approximately 30% of buildings in the city are structurally unfit for use, posing a constant threat to public safety. The survey, conducted in early 2026, assessed over 50,000 structures across the city, identifying issues such as cracks, foundation weakening, and lack of maintenance.
Officials stated that many of these buildings are decades old and have not undergone regular inspections. The corporation has issued notices to owners of unsafe structures, urging them to either repair or demolish the buildings. In some cases, evacuation orders have been issued for buildings deemed imminently dangerous.
The findings have sparked concerns among residents and local authorities, with calls for stricter enforcement of building codes and regular safety audits. The corporation is also considering a special fund to assist low-income owners in making necessary repairs.
