The United Nations Security Council has unanimously adopted Resolution 2797, extending the mandate of the UN Mission for the Referendum in Western Sahara (MINURSO) for another year, until October 31, 2026. The resolution, adopted on October 30, 2025, maintains the mission's primary focus on monitoring the ceasefire between Morocco and the Polisario Front.
The text calls on all parties to resume negotiations without preconditions and in good faith, with the aim of achieving a "just, lasting, and mutually acceptable political solution" to the decades-long conflict. It emphasizes the importance of realism, pragmatism, and compromise.
The resolution also stresses the need to improve the human rights situation and encourages the parties to cooperate with the Office of the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights. The Security Council requested the Secretary-General to provide a report on the situation by September 2026.
