Algeria has reaffirmed its support for the efforts of the United Nations Secretary-General and his Personal Envoy, Staffan de Mistura, to reach a definitive political solution to the Western Sahara conflict. The statement was made by the Algerian Ministry of Foreign Affairs on June 15, 2026, during a meeting between Foreign Minister Ahmed Attaf and de Mistura in Algiers.
According to the ministry, Attaf expressed Algeria's full backing for the UN-led process and reiterated the country's position that a just and lasting solution must be based on the right of the Sahrawi people to self-determination, in accordance with UN resolutions. The meeting focused on the latest developments in the peace process and ways to overcome the current impasse.
De Mistura, who was appointed as Personal Envoy in 2021, has been shuttling between the parties to restart negotiations. The UN has long sought to resolve the dispute between Morocco and the Polisario Front over the former Spanish colony, which has been on the UN list of non-self-governing territories since 1963.
Algeria, which hosts and supports the Polisario Front, has consistently called for a referendum on self-determination as the only path to a definitive solution. The UN Security Council has repeatedly called for a realistic, practicable, and lasting political solution based on compromise.
