A Ukrainian unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) expert has warned that commercial off-the-shelf drones are increasingly ineffective on the battlefield due to Russian electronic warfare (EW) capabilities. The expert, whose name was not disclosed in the original report, stated that standard civilian drones are easily jammed or intercepted by Russian EW systems, which have become more sophisticated since the start of the full-scale invasion in 2022.
According to verified reports from Ukrainian military sources and open-source intelligence, Russian forces have deployed a range of EW systems, including the Krasukha-4 and R-330Zh Zhitel, which can disrupt GPS and communication signals used by commercial drones. This has forced Ukrainian units to rely on custom-built or modified drones that are harder to jam. The expert emphasized that every Ukrainian military unit should have its own drone laboratory to develop and adapt UAVs for specific missions.
The call for decentralized drone production aligns with Ukraine's broader strategy of leveraging grassroots innovation. Since 2022, Ukraine has established a network of volunteer-run workshops and state-backed programs to produce FPV (first-person view) drones and other UAVs. These efforts have been critical in countering Russian EW, as custom drones can be equipped with frequency-hopping radios and other countermeasures.
However, the expert cautioned that even custom drones face challenges, including limited range and payload capacity. The warning comes as Ukraine continues to rely heavily on drones for reconnaissance, artillery spotting, and strike missions. The Ukrainian government has allocated significant funding for domestic drone production, aiming to manufacture over 1 million drones in 2025, according to statements by President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.
The expert's remarks underscore the ongoing technological arms race between Ukrainian drone operators and Russian EW units. While commercial drones remain useful for some tasks, their vulnerability to EW highlights the need for continuous innovation and adaptation at the unit level.
